Office remodelling for a growing digital company
2011-2012 and 2018
The Pixum world is colourful. As one of the leading online photo services in Germany and Europe, Pixum ensures that people can preserve their favourite moments forever. Photos from all over the world in various forms, whether as a book, mobile phone cover or mug, have been with us since we entered the building, located in an industrial complex on the outskirts of Cologne. Back in 2012, we were able to design and realise a new working environment here together with employees and management. In keeping with the expansion at that time, we opted for the tried and tested for the extension of the new floor and continued Pixum’s success story with new architectural means. Founded in 2000, the company now employs more than 150 people.
Expanding another floor for the same customer offers the opportunity to reflect on our own work, rethink areas that are not working, analyse them and simply make them better. The goal we were able to formulate together with all those involved was to continue the tried and tested and provide new impetus. Employees were asked to contribute new ideas but also to be critical of old structures. This resulted in a catalogue of measures that played a key role in determining the new design. The colourful Pixum world is architecturally reflected in the colourful room sculptures. Individual functional units consisting of office workstations, communication zones, cafeteria and meeting rooms are given their respective localisation through zoning of the open-space area. The glossy white epoxy resin floor is connected to the suspended ceiling above the communication areas via the wall panels of the set cubes. A circumferential light joint sets this off from the raw exposed concrete ceiling and thus reinforces the character of the room sculptures set into the shell. These elements were already used in 2012 for the design of the first area.
