Combating the housing crisis with redensification
New construction of a flat block with 18 micro-apartments
2019-2023
In view of the general housing crisis, the private housing construction company Haus Baden had its existing properties examined for the possibility of densification. We found what we were looking for on a plot in Hürth, close to the motorway but also in the immediate vicinity of Cologne’s outer green belt. Here, 18 flats are being built that can be used as 2-bedroom flatshares or small flats with 2 rooms.
Set at right angles to the existing building on the site, the existing garden is shielded from the noise of the motorway, thus enhancing the quality of the existing and new tenants’ experience. All of the new flats are designed as pergolas with their quiet rooms facing south towards this garden. On the 2nd floor, the new building will have a communal meeting point, which will offer washing machines and can also be used for communal activities for the residents. Lined entirely in wood, this room also represents the design ‘heart’ of the house in addition to the basic black colour of all other surfaces.
