New construction of 112 residential places for students
1996-2000
The old buildings – also student flats – had to be demolished for fire safety reasons. The principle of the pavilions is to preserve the ‘habitus’ and ‘order’ of the old building. The floor plans are designed in such a way that quality is created through simple arrangements alone. The two doors alone, which separate each individual room from the communal room, are an expression of the individuality of each person. Retreat or community are selectable, but not automatically present. Inspired by the vertical timber louvre façade of the existing building to be demolished, the cast glass façade was developed. As a single-skin curtain wall, it represents a novelty, so that all details had to be developed and approved by the building authorities. The rainwater retention basin is the unifying element of the overall design. The rainwater collected on the roofs is returned to the natural cycle via evaporation and infiltration.
