New German School Stiehle Cuenca

2019

A large new school centre is to be built on a large hillside plot overlooking the city of Cuenca. A two-part terraced building structure brings every room into direct contact with the surrounding subtropical nature and the fantastic view. Courtyards connect the school’s year groups, whose classrooms are in turn grouped together in clusters. The cafeteria and outdoor auditorium are located in the centre, which opens up towards the valley, between the year group and subject room/administration sections, forming the heart of the school. Clinker bricks and ceramics as building materials produced in Cuenca, together with concrete and regional timber, form the material canon of the new buildings. The daily alternation of rain and zenithal sunlight enables the roof surfaces to be planted with low-maintenance greenery and requires generous covered outdoor areas for lessons, games and sport.
