‘House of opportunities’

New construction of a community centre with multifunctional use

2016-2022

It all started with the idea of the Catholic parishes/pastoral association in Castrop-Rauxel to initiate a model project to promote encounters between people of all generations, with the aim of bundling charitable and family education programmes from various institutions. In terms of urban development, the appeal of the site lies in the opportunity to give shape to the western entrance to Castrop, opposite the industrial monument ‘Erin Colliery winding tower’.

The structural heterogeneity of the surrounding area, which only shows relics of the historic perimeter block development, is countered with a memorable cubature of polygonal rows of buildings, with an emphasis on the corner building as a ‘gateway to the city’ and – through the foyer of the building – a passageway into the green courtyard. In future, a footpath will lead from here to the centre of Castrop with the church of St. Lambertus.
