A House Like a Piece of Furniture
Renovation and New Construction of a Holiday Home
2021-2023
The residential house in the rural surroundings of Euskirchen serves as a retreat for a Cologne family. Nestled in a landscape of villages and agricultural areas, the two-story building blends harmoniously into its natural environment. The hillside location offers impressive panoramic views all the way to Cologne.
The concept by Gernot Schulz Architektur is inspired by a treehouse, creating a close connection to nature. A wide staircase leads directly to the main living floor, which is characterized by a spacious, floor-to-ceiling glazed living room. A fitted cabinet wall with a TV extends outwards like a bay window, emphasizing the open design of the space. The large seating area offers an unobstructed view of the vegetated surroundings, while the kitchen area is located opposite.
The kitchen impresses with high-quality stainless steel processing featuring a swirl finish that conceals signs of use. A freestanding block with work surface combines functionality and design, serving as storage space and rear seating for the adjacent dining area. This multifunctional space forms the heart of the house where the family gathers.
The building is constructed using timber frame construction, with interiors almost exclusively designed with wood. Walls and built-in cabinets are made of silver fir, while the kitchen, stairs, and bathrooms are crafted from ash wood. Treatment with lye, soap, and oils ensures a natural harmony. Screed floors are used in high-traffic areas.
An outbuilding with a barn kitchen provides space for social gatherings. Here too, wood dominates, combined with natural stone surfaces. A sauna with large glazing allows views into nature.
The facade of the house is made of carbonized Japanese cedar, which is weather-resistant and durable. Dark steel window frames provide a contrast. The roof construction is naturally illuminated by a skylight.
The upper floor houses the parents’ bedroom with an en-suite bathroom. The children’s rooms, a guest room with terrace, as well as another bathroom and utility room are located on the lower floor. Thus, the house combines natural materials, well-thought-out architecture, and a close connection to the surrounding landscape.
