From Department Store to Library

Conversion of a former department store into a university library

2023

The concept for the branch library of the University of Siegen focuses on preserving the core structure of the former Hettlage building to conserve resources and minimize construction and planning risks. The new building is terraced and cubically structured to harmoniously blend into the small-scale structure of the neighboring buildings, while presenting an iconic landmark for the university through its powerful, modern architecture.

A transparent, recessed bridge structure over Siegbergstraße strengthens the path to the North Campus. Simultaneously, a barrier-free public passage allows for a connection between different city levels, with security measures preventing unwanted use outside library hours. The main entrance is clearly defined and oriented towards the Lower Castle.

The library concept relies on functional usage layers: service and administrative areas are located behind the existing facade of the old building, while the main access is via spacious spiral staircases. The book storage areas are arranged to act as a noise filter between quiet work areas facing Friedrichstraße and more lively usage zones. Frequently accessed books are located on upper floors to optimize walking distances. A flexible seminar and exhibition area on the ground floor of the new building serves as an interface with the city and can be used independently of the library.

Sustainability plays a central role: The library uses a robust primary structure made of recycled concrete and regionally available materials such as sandstone and wood. Natural ventilation concepts, green terraces to improve the microclimate, and a general avoidance of technical overload reduce energy consumption and maintenance efforts. The supporting structure of the new building is implemented with modularly prefabricated construction elements to minimize construction time and emissions.

The overall concept combines sustainable construction, functional clarity, and modern architecture to create a representative, future-oriented university library that is optimally tailored to the Siegen location in terms of both urban development and its use.
