The concept for the new museum building preserves the historic city wall with its round tower and concentrates the structural development on the inner area of the site. The polygonal building creates diverse visual and path connections, particularly between Hochstraße in the south, the historic path connection of Herrengasse, and the new museum garden. Facade recesses allow for targeted sight lines, such as towards the tower.

The building offers flexible use: On the ground floor, the foyer with event and temporary exhibition spaces forms a multifunctional spatial continuum that can also be used outside opening hours. The permanent exhibition is located on the first floor, whose polygonal shape allows for diverse presentation possibilities. Connections to the tower and the city wall are possible via a terrace and a barrier-free parapet walk. Administration and technical rooms on the second floor are designed to reduce static requirements and save resources.

Sustainability is at the core of the building concept. A concrete skeleton construction is reduced to the bare essentials, using recycled concrete. The facade consists of natural stone and prefabricated wooden frames that accommodate installations. Interior surfaces made of dark-stained wood paneling create a neutral backdrop for exhibitions, while floors are implemented in basalt lava or polished screed.

The outdoor facilities incorporate historical paths and minimize sealed surfaces in favor of edible gardens. Forecourts and garden spaces serve as recreational areas with gastronomic use. An orchard meadow complements the concept of publicly accessible picking opportunities. The museum kitchen acts as a central attraction for visitors and events.

The design concept combines historical elements with modern architecture, creates open, inviting spaces, and enables versatile use for museum visitors, events, and educational offerings.
