Competition 2022, 1st Prize

The school expansion of the Ziehenschule combines compact construction with the preservation of the school forest and the listed existing buildings. A new school boulevard connects all buildings and extends the learning space into the outdoor area.

The new building includes the triple-court sports hall, auditorium, cafeteria, music rooms, a STEM cluster, and a learning community. The sports hall is sunken to create more outdoor space and is supplied with daylight through a light well. Open learning landscapes are oriented towards the school forest and illuminated by light wells. A surrounding pergola serves as an escape route and as an outdoor area for educational use.

The old building houses administration, library, art rooms, and additional learning communities. The former auditorium is integrated into the library as a reading room, while wide corridors are redesigned into open learning landscapes. Heritage conservation measures secure the historical substance and enable modern use.

Accessibility is ensured through elevators in both old and new buildings. The buildings are connected by the pergola, which creates protected pathways between old and new structures.

The new building is based on a sunken reinforced concrete hall with a steel structure and a sustainable timber frame facade. Environmentally friendly materials such as recycled concrete and clay panels are used. Facade greening supports the climate and energy concept.

Passive house standards are met through efficient heat recovery, geothermal energy, and photovoltaics. A hybrid ventilation system combines mechanical and natural ventilation. Rainwater is used for irrigation and climate improvement.

Overall, a sustainable school campus is created, combining modern learning with environmental protection and heritage conservation.
