Composition in the forest

Extension of the Academy of Fine Arts

2009

The outstanding significance of Sep Ruf’s buildings on Bingstrasse is to be preserved and cultivated in its habitus as a composition in the forest. The proposed extension compresses the qualities of the Ruf ensemble at the western entrance to the campus into an architectural essence of generous spatial gestures, intensive communication, insights into the study work and architectural elegance. The building is a study workshop. A generator of publicity, a means of communication and a spatial enrichment for the oldest art academy in the German-speaking world. The building’s great compactness is in dialogue with the composition of the listed building, takes into account to a large extent the existing trees worthy of preservation and is the basis for a building that is economical to construct and maintain and is forward-looking in terms of energy.
