The proposed extension is designed as an interior campus. The university’s own idea of understanding this institution as a place for the cultivation of musical culture, where art, science and teaching intertwine in theory and practice, is given visual expression through the visual connection of different areas, levels and functions of the building. The challenge of the possible disturbance of the residential neighbourhood by the activities of the university is met with the idea of designing the interior of the building like a campus. Here there are places for spontaneous encounters and knowledge exchange as well as places for relaxation and recreation, both inside and on various courtyard levels of the design. The current outdoor campus areas in front of the old building on Wettiner Platz and on the forecourt in front of the concert hall will be complemented by an indoor campus with the spatial concept of the extension. In this way, tradition and (spatial) renewal, continuity and (spatial) experimentation are in lively dialogue, not only in terms of ideas but also architecturally. Open spaces for experimentation, new ways of working and artistic research are part of both everyday university life today and the new extension building.
